Overview
Newgale Beach is one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline on the entire Pembrokeshire coast. A two-mile expanse of sand and pebble backed by a distinctive storm beach of rounded stones, it sits on the western shore of St Brides Bay facing directly into the Atlantic, and the results are spectacular. Big skies, big surf, vast space and a genuinely wild coastal character that sets it apart from the more sheltered beaches further south.
About 35 minutes by car from South View Glamping near Pembroke, Newgale is an excellent option for guests wanting a different kind of beach experience. Where Tenby and Saundersfoot offer sheltered family-friendly swimming, Newgale offers surf, space and a real sense of the power of the west Pembrokeshire coast.
The beach is also well positioned as a base for exploring the northern section of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, with the route passing through the village and offering excellent walking in both directions along cliffs and headlands that are less visited than the more accessible sections around Tenby.

Activities
01
Newgale is one of the best and most consistent surf beaches in Pembrokeshire. The west-facing bay picks up good Atlantic swell and the long sandy beach offers good conditions for surfers of all abilities. Surf lessons and equipment hire are available from the beach cafe during the summer months.
02
At low tide the beach stretches for almost two miles and is one of the finest beach walks in west Wales. The combination of vast sand, crashing surf and the distant headlands of St Brides Bay creates a genuinely exhilarating coastal walking experience.
03
The coast path passes through Newgale village and offers excellent walking in both directions. North towards Nolton Haven and Druidston Haven takes you along quiet cliff-top paths with good sea views. South towards Solva and St Davids is more dramatic and spectacular.
04
Despite its wild character, Newgale is an excellent family beach. The sand is wide and firm, the space is generous and there is always room to spread out even in peak summer. The beach cafe provides food and refreshments throughout the season.
05
A short drive north of Newgale, the pretty harbour village of Solva sits at the head of a dramatic ria — a drowned river valley — and offers excellent restaurants, galleries and coastal walks. Worth combining with a Newgale visit for a full day in this part of Pembrokeshire.
06
In autumn and winter, Newgale comes alive in a different way. Storm swell from the Atlantic produces powerful waves that crash against the pebble bank and fill the beach with spray. Safe to watch from above, it is one of the most dramatic natural spectacles in Pembrokeshire.
Visitor Tips
🌊
If you are planning to surf or take a lesson, check surf conditions in advance. Newgale can be very powerful in onshore winds and the conditions change significantly with wind direction and tide.
🅿
Parking at Newgale is mainly along the A487 road at the top of the pebble bank. It is free but limited in peak summer. Arriving before 10am gives you the best choice of spaces.
🎒
Newgale faces the full force of the Atlantic and can be very windy even on warm days. Bring windproof layers and a windbreak if you want to sit comfortably on the beach in breezy conditions.
